The South Eastern Trust provides acute and community mental health services to a resident population of 358,708 . This population is expected to increase to 372,266 by 2025 and 381,706 by 2035. The Trust currently delivers acute inpatient treatment across three sites:
Lagan Valley Hospital: 21 beds
Downe Hospital: 25 beds
Ulster Hospital: 24 beds
Ward 27 Intensive Care Unit Downshire Hospital: 6 Intensive Care beds and 10 Low secure beds
Total Beds: 76 beds for those individual requiring acute mental health inpatient support and an additional 10 for low secure patients who require a longer period of care.

Ward 27 Ulster Hospital
Ward 27 Ulster Hospital is a 24 bedded acute mental health inpatient ward which cares for individual aged 18-65 years and functionally mentally ill individuals aged over 65 years without diagnosis of Dementia. Individuals who present with acute psychotic presentations, depressive illnesses, individuals with relapsed serious mental illness which require stabilisation and treatment. Individuals with personality disorder, co-morbid disorders, first presentation of mental illness which requires assessment and treatment.

Ward 12 Adult Psychiatry Lagan Valley Hospital
Ward 12 Adult Psychiatry Lagan Valley Hospital is a 20 bedded acute mental health inpatient ward which cares for individual aged 18-65 years.
Both voluntary and detained patients are cared for.
Individuals present with a range of illnesses including psychosis and mood disorders, both first presentation and continuing disorders. Other individuals present with depressive/ anxiety disorders, self- harm and suicidal ideation. Other conditions treated in this service include the care and treatment of individuals with personality disorder and substance misuse.

Ward 27 Downshire Hospital
Ward 27 Downshire Hospital is a mixed model of care with six Psychiatric Intensive Care (PICU) beds and 10 Low secure nursing beds. This is a locked environment which has a low stimulus nursing annexe as well as a seclusion room. Individuals who are cared for in this environment required to be detained under the Mental Health Order (1986). Individuals are referred from the mental health acute inpatient wards, medium secure and prison settings. Individuals typically display challenging or aggressive behaviours that cannot be safely managed in an open ward environment or individuals are resettled form a medium secure environment to a low secure environment. This ward also cares for a low secure, longer stay population who have difficulties in being placed in community settings.
