The Downe Hospital is a local hospital with a type 2 Emergency Department (Currently closed due to covid-19)
A consultant-led Urgent Care Centre is currently operating in the Downe Hospital’s Emergency Department. This will operate from 8am-6pm, Monday – Friday on an appointment only basis, with nurse-led minor injuries services continuing at weekends from 9am to 5pm. Those contacting the service will be triaged and offered an appointment within the urgent care service or directed to the most appropriate service.
The Minor Injuries Unit will be open Saturday – Sunday from 9am – 5pm, by an appointment only basis. The telephone number for Downe Hospital Minor Injuries Service is (028) 4483 8091. Those contacting the service will be given an appointment as appropriate.
There is also a Midwifery Led Maternity Unit.
The hospital has 49 inpatient beds for a range of medical conditions. The Downe provides the Trustwide Bowel Screening Service and Sexual Health Service, as well as a range of outpatient, diagnostics and day case services, such as cataract surgery. Two GP practices are located on the first floor, along with community and dental services.

Getting there
By Car
The Hospital is easily accessible by car from Downpatrick via Ardglass Rd. It is also accessible via the Struell Wells Rd and Flying Horse Rd.By Bus
The hospital can be accessed via the 315A Town Service from Downpatrick. The 16A Ulsterbus service also provides a link to the Downe Hospital. -
Urgent Care Centre
The Emergency Department is currently closed due to Covid-19.
From 19 October 2020 , a consultant-led Urgent Care Centre will open in the Downe Hospital’s Emergency Department. This will operate from 8am-6pm, Monday – Friday on an appointment only basis, with nurse-led minor injuries services continuing at weekends from 9am to 5pm.

Access is by the same entrance, clearly marked and to the right of the main entrance.
Medical patients can be admitted to the Downe Hospital by doctors staffing the Out of Hours service.
If you are seriously ill, phone 999 for an ambulance, as normal. The ambulance will take you to the Ulster, or another appropriate hospital.

Minor Injuries
The Minor Injuries Unit is open Saturday – Dunday, 9am – 5pm, by an appointment only basis. The telephone number for Downe Hospital Minor Injuries Service is (028) 4483 8091. Those contacting the service will be given an appointment as appropriate.
Those contacting the service will be given an appointment as appropriate.The unit can treat a variety of less serious injuries such as limb injuries, sports injuries, minor head injuries, burns and scalds, bites and stings, cuts and grazes, sprains and strains, removal of foreign bodies from ears, eyes and nose, as well as dressing changes and removal of stitches. Children over 5 years of age can be treated but children under 5 should be taken to the nearest Emergency Department. X-ray examinations can be requested by the Nurse Practitioner.
The conditions which cannot be treated include chest pain, abdominal pain, collapse, sore throat, asthma and shortness of breath, gynaecological problems and mental health problems. Intoxicated patients cannot be seen. Patients who are seriously ill should visit their nearest Emergency Department, or in an emergency dial 999.
