The South Eastern Trust provides a wide variety of emergency and elective inpatient, day case and outpatient surgical services for a range of specialties.
Outpatients and Elective care will take place between 9.00am – 5.00pm, Monday – Friday.
Non elective and emergency care is on a 24/7 service provision via the Trust Emergency Departments and non emergency surgery will take place at the Ulster Hospital for most specialties.

General Surgery
General Surgery Services are provided in the Ulster Hospital, Lagan Valley Hospital and Downe Hospital.
Consultant Surgeons provide specialty services across these hospital sites for:
- Upper & Lower Gastrointestinal Surgery
- Urology
- Colorectal
- Breast and Endocrine
- Endoscopy
Ulster Hospital – Provides elective surgery and 24 hour emergency surgery to General Surgery.
There are three General Surgery inpatient wards at the Ulster Hospital Inpatient Ward Block which provide inpatient beds for patients who require inpatient, elective or emergency surgery:
Wards 5A: Elective admissions
Ward 5B & 5C: Emergency admissions
Ward 8: Day of Surgery Admission Ward
Lagan Valley Hospital – Provides elective day case surgery.
Downe Hospital – Provides elective day case surgery.
Outpatient General Surgery Services are provided on all sites including Bangor and Ards Community Hospitals.

Opthalmology
The Ophthalmology Service is provided through Outpatient Departments and day-case facilities across the Trust provided by a multidisciplinary team.
The Downe Hospital is one of the new Elective Centres delivering a day surgery cataract service, serving patients across Northern Ireland.
While some patients may be asked to travel further for their treatment, they benefit by receiving more rapid assessment, more timely care, and better outcomes.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
The Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery service provides a full range of Oral & Maxillofacial inpatient, day case and outpatient services as a regionally specialty.
Ulster Hospital – Provides elective surgery and 24 hour emergency surgery to Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. There is a Maxillofacial Laboratory on the Ulster Hospital site which also provides a regional service.
The regional Plastic and Oral Maxillofacial Unit is located on Ward 4C in the Ulster Hospital Inpatient Ward Block and Ward 8 Day of Surgery Admissions Unit.
Downe Hospital – Provide elective day case surgery.
Outpatient Services
Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Outpatient Services are provided on Ulster and Downe Hospital and other peripheral sites identified below.
Outpatient clinics are held at Antrim Area Hospital, Craigavon Area Hospital, Daisy Hill Hospital, and Mid Ulster Hospital.
Outreach Day Surgery services are currently provided at Antrim Area Hospital, Craigavon Area Hospital and Daisy Hill Hospital.

Plastic Surgery
The Plastic Surgery service provides a full range of Plastic inpatient, day case and outpatient services as a regionally specialty.
The Consultant Plastic Surgeons provide surgery in the Ulster Hospital, Lagan Valley Hospital and in the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children.
Ulster Hospital – Provides elective surgery and 24 hour emergency surgery.
A Plastics Trauma Clinic (located on Level 2 Critical Care block, opposite the Multi-Storey car park) provides urgent assessment and treatment for patients across the region.
Lagan Valley Hospital – Provides elective day case surgery.
Plastic Surgery Outpatient Services are provided on all sites including Bangor and Ards Community Hospitals.
Outreach Outpatient Clinics are held at Antrim Area Hospital, Altnagelvin Hospital and Craigavon Area Hospital.

Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery
The Ulster Hospital Fracture Service is part of a regional Trauma and Orthopaedic Service. The Ulster Hospital provides treatment for emergency conditions only.
Following attendance at the Ulster and Downe Hospital Emergency Department or at Bangor or Ards Minor Injury Unit all xrays and notes are reviewed at Virtual Fracture Clinic by a consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon who will make a clinical decision for the treatment plan.
Musgrave Park Hospital in the Belfast Trust provides elective orthopaedic services for the South Eastern Trust catchment for example total hip or knee replacements.
Ulster Hospital – Provides day case surgery and emergency surgery. There are two Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery inpatient wards at the Ulster Hospital Inpatient Ward Block which provide beds for patients who require inpatient, or emergency surgery:
Wards 4A & 4B : Emergency admissions
Ulster Hospital also provides elective day case surgery on Ward 8: Day of Surgery Admission ward between 9.00am – 5.00pm.
Outpatient Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery Services are provided at the Ulster Hospital and Downe Hospital.

Urology
Urology covers the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, prostate and male reproductive organs. These clinics are both Consultant and Nurse-led, with a wide range of supporting multi-disciplinary personnel.
Nurse-led Services
The Nurse-led services include:
- Prostate Assessment
- Prostate Cancer Review
- Cancer Support
- Nurse Led Stone Clinic
- Nurse Led Cystoscopy Service
- Nurse Led Intravesical treatment for patients with Bladder Cancer
- Nurse Led Erectile Dysfunction Service
- Intermittent Self-Catheterisation Service
Urology Services within the Trust are provided in a range of inpatient, day care and outpatient environments on all five hospital sites.
Ulster Hospital – Provides elective surgery and 24 hour emergency surgery
Urology inpatients at the Ulster Hospital are admitted to the Inpatient Ward Block:
Wards 5a: Elective admissions
Ward 5b & 5c: Emergency admissions
Ward 8: Day of Surgery Admission ward
Lagan Valley Hospital – Provides elective day case surgery
Downe Hospital – Provides elective day case surgery

Vascular
Vascular Services deal with the diagnosis, treatment and management of conditions affecting the health of the body’s circulation. Usually, this involves treating diseases of the arteries, veins and lymphatic vessels.
The Lagan Valley Hospital is one of the new Elective Centres delivering a day surgery varicose veins service, serving patients across Northern Ireland.
While some patients may be asked to travel further for their treatment, they benefit by receiving more rapid assessment, more timely care, and better outcomes.
