Fasting Guidelines for Surgical Patients
If you have been told to come in for 7AM:
- Do not eat after midnight
- Do continue to drink non-fizzy liquids ie. Water, black tea, black coffee, diluting juice (squash) until 6AM
- You may chew gum until 6AM
- Pre-op drinks provided from Pre-op assessment clinic can be consumed until 6AM
If you have been told to come in for 10AM:
- You may have a light early breakfast (cereal/toast) before 6AM
- Do continue to drink non-fizzy liquids ie. Water, black tea, black coffee, diluting juice (squash) until 8AM
- You may continue to chew gum until 6AM
PLEASE CONTACT US IF:
- You have developed an illness in the run up to surgery
- You have any queries about what medications you stop prior to surgery
- You have started any new medications ( not prescribed by us) after your Pre-op Assessment Appointment
- Your circumstances have changed and you may not be able to attend for your date of surgery
- You have any other queries or concerns regarding your planned admission for surgery
- You have had close contact with someone who has developed an infectious disease ie chickenpox
- You are unsure what you need to bring with you for admission
