Maynard Ward, based in the Ulster Hospital, is an acute medical inpatient unit caring for children and young people from birth up to their 16th birthday. We provide care in partnership with all who attend our unit.
You will find us on the 2nd floor at the front of the main hospital building.

Nursing handover starts at 07:30 and takes place at the bed side. This involves the child/young person, parents/guardians and the nursing team.
The medical ward round starts approximately at 09:30 and parents/guardians are encouraged to be present.

Parent Information
Patient catering arrangements:
Breakfast starts at approximately 07.45am after nursing handover.
Lunch starts at approximately 12pm
Evening Meal at approximately 4.30pm
Supper on request at bedtime.
Tea, coffee, biscuits and toast can be given upon request as well as jugs of ice, water and juice.
Each meal time a selection of food is available on a trolley, special dietary needs are catered for on request.
Parents can avail of the canteen which is located in the new Acute Services Block.
There is a Quiet hour 2-3pm. This is a good time for naps and rest before dinner. We try not to carry out any interventions during this time but we are very much here if you need us.
Parent facilities:
There is a parents’ tea room available for use, this is located on Craig Ward which is directly above Maynard. There is a Quiet room directly outside Maynard which can be used on request.
There are shower facilities available.
One parent is very welcome to stay overnight. We aim to have a lights out, noise down routine for bedtime – Lights out by 8pm. We ask if you are using devices after this time that you use ear phones.

Visiting
The ward operates an open visiting policy until 8pm.
Siblings can visit during the day April – September.
Unfortunately due to Seasonal illnesses strictly no siblings/children to visit October – March.
No more than two visitors at any one time.
Overnight one parent/guardian can stay.
