After more than 45 years of service, Biomedical Scientist, Ruth Boyce has retired from her role in the Laboratories at the Ulster Hospital.
Ruth began her career in 1980 in the Microbiology Department at Forster Green Hospital Laboratories before joining the Ulster Hospital Microbiology Laboratory in 1996, where she has served with dedication and professionalism ever since.
Throughout her career, Ruth has made an outstanding contribution not only to the Trust, but also internationally. She played a leading role in the Trust’s Kiwoko Project, supporting the development of vital laboratory services in Kiwoko Hospital, Uganda, over many years. Her commitment helped to strengthen services, build skills and create lasting partnerships.
Ruth has also given significant service to the wider profession, acting as both Committee Member and Chairperson of the local branch of the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS), where she was highly respected by colleagues across Northern Ireland.
To celebrate her retirement, staff past and present came together alongside representatives from the Kiwoko Project and IBMS to thank Ruth for her decades of dedication.
Reflecting on her career, Ruth said, “I have thoroughly enjoyed my career working in laboratories. While much of our work is behind the scenes, it provides such a vital service as part of the larger team that works together to provide our Health Service.”
South Eastern Trust, Head Biomedical Scientist, Ryan Graydon wished Ruth well on her retirement and added, “Ruth has been an invaluable member of our team. Her commitment, expertise and compassion have not only helped shape our laboratory services, but have also inspired colleagues across the Trust and beyond. Her contribution to the Kiwoko Project demonstrates her generosity of spirit and her desire to improve healthcare for communities far beyond our own. We are deeply grateful for everything she has given, and we wish her a long and happy retirement.”
