Guitars for Wellbeing Strikes a Chord on the Ards Peninsula

27th August 2025

Music has the power to bring people together and that is exactly what Guitars for Wellbeing, based on the Ards Peninsula, is doing. The group, led by South Eastern Trust Social Work Teams working in GP practices across the area, is designed to build confidence, make connections and help tackle social isolation and loneliness.

For many participants, the group has been transformative. Henrietta Mason, who attends the Kircubbin group shared, “I am just delighted that I can now play some sort of music and I will hopefully keep practising at it. It was good to meet new people and it just makes you feel better about yourself, learning new things. I would urge anyone considering attending to give it a go, you have nothing to lose and you can learn something new. Come along and try it, you will meet new people and it is good craic!”

The group first began in Portaferry before expanding to Kircubbin to ensure more people across the Peninsula could access sessions.

South Eastern Trust, Social Work Assistant, Gabriel Carlin, explained “The Guitars for Wellbeing Group was set up to support the emotional, physical and social wellbeing of people in the local community. These connections can help break the cycle of loneliness, create a sense of belonging and often can lead to lasting friendships. The groups empower people to feel better in themselves and not feel so isolated.

“There is a wide mix of people who attend, all for different personal reasons. For some, it is simply about friendship and connection. Some of those who attend, have never even picked up a guitar before! To see someone play a tune after nine weeks is just fantastic  and the sense of connection the class brings is incredible.

“At first people can be hesitant, but they quickly warm to each other and the group becomes more united. Through participation, we hope to boost people’s self-esteem and confidence, all while having fun.”

The groups are free to attend and welcome anyone who would like to take part.
