To mark World Orthoptic Day the South Eastern Trust is highlighting the incredible work of the Orthoptics Team.
These highly skilled professionals play a critical role in the diagnosis, treatment and management of a wide range of eye movement disorders and binocular issues.
Orthoptists are particularly involved in the care of children, who have undergone squint surgery. After surgery, they carry out a range of specialist assessments to ensure the procedure was successful and that the child is not experiencing double vision or misalignment.
Orthoptic Professional Lead, Jennifer Patterson explains “Children may be disorientated and unable to function properly when they come out of surgery and we are on hand to help them through this process. We ensure they are comfortable and are not experiencing any unusual post-op problems. “
Orthoptists are uniquely trained to assess and manage complex binocular vision problems and their work is essential in ensuring safe recovery and long term visual development.
The South Eastern Trust is proud to recognise the vital role Orthoptists play in delivering compassionate, high quality care to their patients every day.
