A Looked After 17-year-old girl in the South Eastern Trust has turned her determination and compassion into a powerful piece of writing. Simran Ali, has compiled and published a book entitled “The Dark Years,” which tells the story of a young Somali woman harmed by cultural traditions such as Female Genital Mutilation, forced marriage and being denied the right to love freely.
Based on a true story, The Dark Years shines a light on the harsh realities faced by many young girls growing up in traditional or culturally restrictive communities. In these environments, girls often have no choice or voice, unable to refuse practices such as Female Genital Mutilation while still very young.
An extract from The Dark Years captures the book’s message of resilience and empowerment, “You alone hold the power to transform your life. No matter how difficult the journey, you are the architect of your own destiny. Embrace the challenges, for within them lies your power to endure and thrive. As I reflect on my journey, I realise the painful moments shape us. A practice forced upon me at a young age was one such moment. But it was not the end of my story, it was a chapter that made me stronger.”
Speaking about her motivation to write the book, Simran said, “I felt it was so important to highlight these issues facing young women and girls and I am so proud of myself for doing it. I hope the book will open people’s eyes to the reality of forced traditions and the suffering that many girls face in silence.
“I want readers to feel empathy and courage, the courage to speak out, to help others and to stand against injustice. I hope this book gives strength to everyone who has ever felt powerless.”
Simran’s Social Worker, Jasmine Doherty, praised her resilience and passion, describing the book as both inspiring and educational, “The book is truly amazing. We, as a team, are so proud of Simran and everything she has achieved. Since I met her, she has been so driven and focused on creating something that would better the lives of Somali and African girls who come after her.
“Simran wants this book to help people, that is always been her motivation. She has worked so independently to publish this herself and her focus has been remarkable. We hope the book will also help educate staff and others about the realities of Female Genital Mutilation and the challenges faced by young women growing up in Somalia.”
