Staff from the Macmillan Cancer Unit at the Ulster Hospital hosted a Haematology Cancer Health and Wellbeing event attended by patients and their families, providing support, advice and information for those living with or beyond cancer.

The afternoon gave attendees the chance to hear from the hospital’s medical teams and Macmillan Health and Wellbeing Co-ordinator, Karen Kelly, who shared guidance on eating well after a cancer diagnosis, managing fatigue and the important role of physical activity in recovery and ongoing cancer care.

Guests were also able to visit a variety of information stands and speak with representatives from Rosie’s Trust, Cancer Focus, and Macmillan Welfare Advice, who offered further support and guidance to those affected by haematological cancer.

Among those attending was Bangor man, Raymond Gilkes, who is now in remission from Hairy Cell Leukaemia. Raymond expressed his gratitude to the staff at the Macmillan Unit, saying,

“The staff were so supportive to me. Even though I am now clear, I wanted to come to this event to show my support. The staff in the Unit did so much for me — it’s unbelievable how well they look after you.”

Reflecting on the purpose of the event, Karen Kelly said, “We run this event each year for people affected by haematological cancer, particularly those who are coming towards the end of their treatment.

“We know people want more information than just what relates to the physical side effects of treatment. Events like this highlight the wider support and services available to them and help people feel more informed and connected as they move forward.”
