For more than 50 years, the Ulster Hospital Ladies Committee has provided vital support to patients, not only through friendly trolley visits to the wards, but also by raising funds to improve care and comfort throughout the hospital.

Most recently, the Committee fundraised and purchased a new sofa for the Endoscopy Department at the Ulster Hospital, just one of many contributions made over the decades to enhance the hospital experience for patients and families.

Ulster Hospital Ladies Committee Volunteer, Alison Mladek, explained, “The Ulster Hospital Ladies Committee was originally formed by the wives of the Consultants in the Ulster Hospital over 50 years ago. We have been taking the trolley around the wards ever since.”

“The Committee stocks the trolley with confectionery, toiletries, biscuits, drinks, crisps, magazines and even books, offering a little bit of comfort and distraction during hospital stays.

“We are currently trying to find some new Volunteers who would be willing to give just two mornings a month.  It is not just about selling items, it is about stopping to chat, especially with patients who may be feeling lonely, have no visitors, or just need someone to talk to.”

Alison added, “Lately, we have not always been able to cover every day. The Committee currently has around 20 volunteers and hopes to return to providing trolley services across the wards, Monday to Friday.

“When we are on the wards, it is so lovely to see the smiles. You really feel that you are giving something back.”

South Eastern Trust Volunteer Services Manager, Sonya Duffy, praised the Committee’s ongoing fundraising efforts and said, “The Ladies Committee at the Ulster Hospital do a fantastic job and they have made such a meaningful contribution over the years. Their fundraising has helped improve hospital facilities and their presence on the wards brings joy and companionship to so many patients. We are incredibly grateful for all that they do.”
