New Dedicated Day Obstetric Unit Opens At Ulster Hospital Maternity Unit

6th March 2026

Women attending the Ulster Hospital Maternity Unit are set to benefit from improved care and enhanced patient experience following the opening of a new dedicated Day Obstetric Unit.

Located on the first floor of the Maternity Unit, the new facility separates planned obstetric care from emergency care, allowing Midwives to focus more effectively on the individual needs of women attending appointments.

The introduction of the Day Obstetric Unit is designed to improve safety, communication and overall patient flow, while reducing waiting times and delays for women requiring both planned and urgent maternity care.

Led by a team of Senior Midwives, the initiative will also help reduce congestion within the Emergency Obstetric Unit, ensuring women who require urgent assessment can be seen more quickly.

South Eastern Trust, Clinical Manager & Deputy Head of Midwifery, Zoe Meneilly explained, “The opening of our dedicated Day Obstetric Unit is an important development for Maternity Services at the Ulster Hospital. By separating planned and emergency care, we can provide a calmer environment for women attending scheduled appointments while ensuring those who need urgent care are assessed without delay.

“This new way of working allows Midwives to focus more closely on each woman’s individual needs, improving communication, safety and overall experience.  We hope to build on this success by expanding the model further to continue improving maternity care for the families we support.”
