A resident of the South Eastern Trust’s Struell Lodge supported housing, has returned from the Special Olympics Ireland Summer Games with an impressive Gold and Silver medal haul after an outstanding performance in Bocce.
Downpatrick’s Jackie Stewart competed alongside more than 1,000 athletes from across Ireland at the three-day event in Dublin, which celebrated the 40th anniversary of Special Olympics Ireland. Competitors showcased their talents across a wide range of sports including golf, swimming, bowling, equestrian, table tennis and Bocce. The Games were attended by President Catherine Connolly.
Representing Down Special Olympics Sports Club, Jackie teamed up with Bocce partner Chris Craig to win Gold in the pairs competition, while also claiming an individual Silver medal. The pair are now hoping to secure selection for Team Ireland at the Special Olympics World Games in Santiago, Chile next year.
Jackie, who joined Down Special Olympics Sports Club in 2009, is no stranger to success having previously won Gold at the 2018 Special Olympics Ireland Games.
Speaking about her latest achievement, the 48-year-old said, “I feel brilliant. I am so proud. Bocce and golf are my favourite sports and this is my third time taking part in the Special Olympics Ireland Games. Winning Gold and Silver means so much to me.”
Reflecting on the event, Jackie added, “One of my favourite moments was hearing my name called during the Opening Ceremony. It was such a special feeling.
“I am hoping to be selected for the World Games in Santiago, Chile and will find out later this year. It is very exciting.”
