A Downpatrick family has raised almost £3,000 through a charity darts match in memory of their beloved dad Sammy Sharvin, as a heartfelt thank you to the South Eastern Trust teams who cared for him during the final stages of his life.
The Sharvin family presented the funds to the Downe Hospital’s Community Respiratory and Palliative Care Teams following the exceptional care and compassion shown to Sammy and his family.
Sammy’s daughter Pauline said the care her father received from the hospital Teams was “exceptional” and the family wanted to do something positive in his memory.
Pauline said, “We have been fundraising for the Downe Hospital since 2019. To date we have raised almost £20,000 which has been divided between the Community Respiratory and Palliative Care Team. Our Dad received wonderful care from the staff.
“As a family, we wanted to do something positive in his memory and give back to the staff who cared so compassionately for him.
“Dad was very well known throughout the Downpatrick community, especially through darts, he was in a league and was a really good player. Dad was still playing up until he was 78 and was one of the oldest players. He was a highly respected member.”
On behalf of the Sharvin family, Pauline stated, “We would like to thank everyone who took part, donated and make the fundraiser so successful. We are extremely grateful for the support and of course to the Downe Hospital staff.”
South Eastern Trust, Advanced Nurse Practitioner, Respiratory Medicine, Rosemary Thom added, “We would like to thank the Sharvin family for their continued support in memory of their dad Sammy. It is amazing how much they have raised through their annual charity events over the years. The Respiratory Teams have utilised the proceeds by organising community respiratory condition awareness and support events, purchasing equipment for patient use and for staff training. It truly has made such a difference to all who have benefitted.”
