Newtownards Cuan Court turned ‘gold’ to welcome Northern Ireland’s own Olympic hero Rhys McClenaghan through its doors much to the delight of the residents.

The 25-year-old Olympic, World, European and Commonwealth champion gymnast took time to talk with Cuan Court residents and proudly displayed his Gold Olympic medal which he took home from Paris for the Pommel Horse section of the Games.

Resident June Rainey described Rhys’ visit as a, “lovely surprise from a lovely young man.”

“Rhys was very pleasant and sociable and spoke to everyone and everyone was excited to see the Gold medal,” said June.

June continued, “Rhys spoke with my daughter and care staff and the atmosphere was lovely. In Cuan Court we are lucky as we have tremendous support from community which keeps us all together and for Rhys from our ‘wee’ town to visit on Carers Day. For me, this was a thank you to the staff for their amazing care.”

Manager of Cuan Court Rhonda Robinson described Rhys’ visit as a, “fabulous surprise” for the residents. “Rhys shared his Olympic success story and we all got to see the gold medal. We are all very proud of Rhys`s success and grateful he allowed us to share his time and medal with us.”
