Downe Nurse Retires after an Incredible Five Decades in Nursing

After an amazing career spanning almost 50 years in nursing, Staff Nurse Mary McElroy bids farewell to Ward 2 in the Downe Hospital, marking the end of an era.

As Mary embarks on her well-deserved retirement, she leaves behind a legacy of service that has touched the lives of countless patients and colleagues in the Downe Hospital.

Mary’s nursing journey began almost five decades ago, starting out in Belvoir Park Hospital before moving to the Royal Hospital and then to the Downe Hospital. Mary had a passion for helping others and a commitment to making a difference in the lives of those she cared for. Throughout her remarkable career, Mary exemplified the true essence of empathy, professionalism and kindness.

In May 2023, Mary was awarded a Cavell Star Award for her dedication and commitment to patient care.

Reflecting on her career, Mary said, “It is with mixed emotions that I am now retiring. It has been an incredible journey filled with challenges, triumphs and unforgettable moments. I am grateful for the privilege of caring for patients and their families. I will cherish the memories and relationships that I have made for many years to come.

“As I embark on this new chapter in my life, I have a sense of pride and fulfilment knowing that I have made a difference in the lives of so many patients and their families. I would like to thank my colleagues for all the support given to me throughout my career.”

Wishing Mary well in her retirement, Ward Manager, Caroline Smith said, “Mary’s leadership, expertise and dedication to patient care have left an indelible mark on the hearts of her patients she has cared for over the years. Her retirement marks the end of an era for Ward 2 and indeed for the Downe Hospital as a whole.

“Her commitment to nursing excellence and her compassionate approach to patient care have set a standard that will be remembered for years to come. Mary will be deeply missed by us all.”
As Mary bids farewell to her nursing career, she leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire generations of nurses to come.
