Downpatrick woman, Deborah Fitzsimons, has honoured her late father’s memory by following in his musical footsteps and hosting a special live music event at Denvir’s Coaching Inn last Saturday. The event raised an incredible £3,000 for the Macmillan Unit at the Ulster Hospital.

Deborah has been performing in venues across the region and in Belfast since she was 17, drawing inspiration from her father, Damien Fitzsimons, who played in renowned local bands Purple Haze and Red Biddy.

Delighted by the overwhelming support, Deborah said, “The Music Fitz event was a huge success and we are incredibly grateful to everyone who made it possible. From the generous donations of raffle prizes to the 23 talented musicians who performed, the kindness of Denvir’s Bar for providing the venue and food, and the dedicated volunteers who planned and organised the event from start to finish, their support meant the world.”

She added, “I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who bought tickets, donated and danced the night away, all in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. This cause is especially close to our hearts, as our father, Damien Fitzsimons, sadly passed away from lung cancer in February 2023. Throughout his journey, Macmillan was there for us every step of the way, offering guidance and unwavering support, not just to him but to our entire family. He was always grateful to the incredible staff who cared for him during his treatment.

“All of the musicians who performed had played alongside Damien over the years, and seeing music bring people together to celebrate his memory while raising funds for such an important cause was the best tribute to him.”

Thanking Deborah and everyone who contributed, Macmillan Cancer Unit Ward Manager, Angela Berry, stated, “We are incredibly grateful to Deborah, her family and everyone who contributed to this fantastic event at Denvir’s Coaching Inn. Their generosity and dedication will make a real difference in supporting patients and families who rely on the Macmillan Cancer Unit. The funds raised will help us continue providing compassionate care and essential services to those in need.”
