Blackwood and Mahee Golf Club have very generously donated £1000 to the Cancer Services Department based in the Macmillan Unit at the Ulster Hospital.

The money was raised at the Blayne Andrews memorial weekend competition, which is held annually in memory of the son of Blackwood and Mahee Golf Club member, William Andrews.

In June 2022 William’s Father-in-law, David McClean was treated by the Palliative Care team in the Ulster Hospital before he passed away after a short illness.

The family was extremely appreciative for the care that the team provided to Mr McClean.

William explained, “The care and support of the Palliative Care team in the Ulster Hospital made sure that David’s last days were as comfortable as possible. They not only helped my Father-in-law but they also helped my family through a very sad and emotional time. We cannot thank them enough for what they did for us. I would also like to thank ex-Captain Mark Clarke and Mr Captain Sandy Stothers for arranging this donation.”

Interim Assistant Director of Medical Specialities and Cancer, Mary Jo Thompson, who accepted this donation said, “The Trust’s Cancer Services and Palliative teams are very grateful to the ex-Captain Mark Clarke and Mr Captain Sandy Stothers for choosing the Macmillan Unit as one of his charities to be a beneficiary of fundraising during their Captain’s year.

“This money will help to improve patients’ comfort and will support training opportunities for our staff to ensure an excellent standard of service delivery. On behalf of our staff and patients I would like to say, thank you so much to all of the members of Blackwood and Mahee Golf Club.”
