Mums across the South Eastern Trust are benefitting from the dedicated support of Community Midwives, who provide compassionate, skilled care and reassurance as families adjust to life with a new baby.
Building relationships throughout pregnancy and continuing into the early weeks of parenthood, Community Midwives provide personalised Post-Natal care, in the comfort of a family’s own home. From supporting infant feeding and monitoring recovery after birth, to offering emotional reassurance and advice on local services, they help ensure both mum and baby get the very best start.
Cara French from Lisburn, who is Mum to ten-day old Una, shared how the level of care and support that she has received since bringing her baby daughter home, has been outstanding.
Cara said, “Una is my third baby and you do forget things and every baby is different. It has been great to have the Community Midwife as a point of contact for tips, advice and making me feel confident in baby Una’s journey.”
South Eastern Trust, Community Midwife, Megan Walker explained how she was inspired to study for her profession after the excellent care she received following the birth of her own daughter.
Megan added, “I went back to school, completed my training and I have not looked back. I have been a Community Midwife for the past two years and I love the continuity of it. I love seeing Mums get the personalised care that they need and seeing them at home with their baby.”
Megan continued, “We visit Mums on certain days throughout the Post-Natal period. The day after they come home from hospital, on Day Five and Day Ten and if they need any extra support in between that time, we would come out and see them too.
“As a Community Midwife we carry out a ‘Top to Toe’ check on baby which involves weighing and a blood spot test. We carry out the Top to Toe check on Mum too to make sure she is well. Our role is very much to support Mums in their own home.
“Having a baby is a very significant time in their life and we want to make them feel as comfortable as possible.
“I have been visiting Cara since she came home with Una and it is always so nice to see familiar faces and build that trust and rapport with them. It is one of the most rewarding parts of the job.”
