Lakewood BAKE-OFF a Triumph

3rd December 2021

Lakewood Children’s Facility in Bangor was filled with the delightful smell of cakes and buns on Wednesday as both children and staff competed in their first Christmas Bake-Off Competition.

There was an array of colourful cakes, buns, shortbread and biscuits on display in the dance hall and competition was fierce as both children and staff vied for first place!

The Chairman of the South Eastern Trust Jonathan Patton was one of the judges.

”As a cake lover I got to experience my dream job with judging the Lakewood Bakeoff Competition!”

“The effort and time invested was immediately evident in the 16 entrants and there were some real ‘show stoppers’ – the words sculpture and work of art would not be out of place to describe them. Taste did not disappoint either,  it was almost impossible to pick the No1 cake.”

But after much deliberation the “Rudolf” cake, baked by the pupils at Lakewood’s School was victorious and claimed the first prize.

The director of Children’s Services in the South Eastern Trust also judged the Christmas Bake-Off. Barbara Campbell said, “ Our young people and our staff really embraced the idea and delivered the most amazing cakes and treats for the competition. It was lovely to see how staff managed to harness the desire to compete along with the skills of cooking and baking. The competition really highlighted how our staff value our children and invest in them in such practical but fun ways. I want to say a massive thank you to everyone involved.”

A senior manager at Lakewood Jane Hindes stressed she was proud of all the children who entered the Bake-Off, adding the competiton, “created a lot of excitement and fun at Lakewood. It was a massive success. The reality is that everyone was a winner as we all got to share the gorgeous cakes afterwards!”
