The South Eastern Trust has launched its first dedicated Home Maintenance Ventilation (HMV) Clinic for its respiratory patients, who require non-invasive ventilation during the night.
As part of World HMV Day, Ulster Hospital Consultant Dr Grainne Doran explained how the new service has been rolled out for respiratory patients with complex needs so that they can avail of the service close to their own home.
“Our patients who may have advanced COPD, neuromuscular disease or complex sleep disorders can have their ventilation needs individualised and be followed up to ensure their device is providing the highest level of support,” said Grainne.
“The purpose of the clinic is to create ‘a one stop shop’, to minimise the amounts of appointments for the patients. We can fit their mask and service their machine while they have their consultant led appointment. We have had really good feedback from patients and the service has been well received. This is a very valuable service to both the patient and the clinician.”
Trust Advanced Nurse Practitioner Kevin O’Brien added, “The service is really making a difference to our patients. In the past there was no dedicated service within the South Eastern Trust and it is helping to provide comfort to the patient in their home setting.”
