To mark Volunteers’ Week, the South Eastern Trust is shining a light on the incredible contributions of its Volunteers, including two former staff members who have retired from the Trust and returned in new roles, this time as dedicated Volunteers.
Since the official formation of Volunteer Services 24 years ago, the number of volunteers in the Trust has grown significantly. Today, almost 400 volunteers give their time and energy across hospital and community settings, making a real difference in the lives of patients, service users, visitors and staff.
The Trust is proud to have a long and distinguished tradition of involving Volunteers, with some volunteers supporting services for more than 40 years. This spirit of giving back continues today with former staff returning to Volunteer after retirement.
Sally McMullan, who worked for 24 years as a Nursing Auxiliary in Coronary Care at the Ulster Hospital, is now a Meeter and Greeter Volunteer based at the Critical Care Unit every Friday afternoon. Sally said, “I am really sorry that I have only got a year under my belt. I should have started Volunteering when I retired nine years ago! I love it, it really is the best thing I have ever done.
“During a hospital stay last year, I was visited by a Volunteer Buddy. He told me about Volunteering and it inspired me to get involved. If you are thinking about Volunteering, do it now you’ll enjoy it! I have lost eight years where I could have been helping people and enjoying this rewarding experience.”
Sandra Best has been Volunteering at Thompson House Hospital in Lisburn for over a year. Sandra was a Nurse at Thompson House since 1982, she spent her final three years there as Ward Sister before retiring in early 2024. Sandra added, “I started Volunteering about three months before I retired, I just did not want to lose that connection.
“I love chatting with the patients and their families. Thompson House Hospital has always been a part of my life, and it is a pleasure to come here. It is such a lovely place, the people and the patients are all like a big family.”
Volunteer Services Manager, Sonya Duffy encouraged others to consider getting involved. Sonya stated, “The South Eastern Trust welcomes Volunteers of all ages. Many of our Volunteers are retirees who find that giving their time helps them stay connected, meet new people and maintain structure in their lives. Volunteering is not just about giving, it is about gaining friendships, purpose and a deep sense of fulfilment.”
Volunteers carry out a wide range of essential roles including Meeters and Greeters, Volunteer Drivers, Activity Volunteers, Ward Volunteers, Peer Supporters and Befrienders in the community. These roles help support patients and service users of all ages across the South Eastern Trust area.
