Children living with Type 1 Diabetes enjoyed an afternoon of fun, colour, and connection as they came together with their families to mark World Diabetes Day, organised by the South Eastern Trust Paediatric Diabetes Team. The event offered a chance for children and families to meet others who understand life with the condition.
Saintfield Community Centre opened its doors to welcome families including Trust staff and representatives from Diabetes UK creating a warm and supportive atmosphere.
Attending the event with her seven-year-old son Henry, Mum Marlene Wilson shared how much she and her family appreciated the supportive and welcoming atmosphere and how proud she is of her son’s “positivity.”
“I am the one that worries a bit more,” explained Marlene. “Henry does not know any different as he was diagnosed when he was three years old. I think it is amazing to have a day like today. Henry is so happy and he feels special. Henry feels it is important to have a day like this because it helps him feel seen,” said Marlene.
South Eastern Trust, Paediatric Diabetes Specialist Nurse, Catherine McKinley shared how the Diabetes Team, “Look after 277 children living with Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes which has a massive impact on the child and their family and we want to celebrate them today,” said Catherine.
“Children with Diabetes can do everything their peers can do, there is nothing they cannot achieve. But in a single day, they probably do 50 extra things because of their condition that those of us without Diabetes never have to think about. Today is about recognising that, recognising them and appreciating the extra effort their families put in every day.”
Catherine continued, “We want to thank DW Coaching for coming along, beautician Antonia Marner for giving hand massages to parents and Crossgar’s Bloom and Bows for treating the children to mini manicures and facial glitter.
“We have welcomed these children and their families to this event to have fun, spend time with their peers and give something back to them. It has been a wonderful day!”
