Crossgar Crafting Connections to Help Tackle Loneliness

1st April 2026

A creative initiative run by the South Eastern Trust Social Work Multi-Disciplinary Team in Crossgar has helped to tackle social isolation by bringing people together and back into the heart of their community.

Held in Crossgar War Memorial Hall, the crafting sessions provided a friendly space for local people to connect, share experiences and try something new, all while enjoying a cup of tea and company.

South Eastern Trust, Senior Social Work Practitioner, Amanda McMillen explained that the month-long initiative was designed to support those who may be experiencing social isolation.

Amanda stated, “Research tells us that the impact of social isolation is the equivalent of smoking up to 14 cigarettes a day. This craft group is about bringing people together, strengthening relationships within the community and giving people the opportunity to try something new, while building relationships.”

Full-time Carer and Service User, Katie Morter, shared how much she enjoyed the sessions. “I would be on my own a lot and I cannot go out in the evenings as I am a full time Carer. I really like art and the sessions have been great. I have really enjoyed chatting to the ladies around me, it has been lovely. There is a real focus on helping you relax and decompress.”

South Eastern Trust, Social Work Assistant, Kathleen Tourangin added, “These groups are a fantastic way of bringing people together. Since COVID, we have found that many people were reluctant to leave their homes. The crafting sessions have encouraged people to come along, learn a new skill and take home something they have made.

“It has also been great to see friendships forming, some of the ladies even go for coffee afterwards.  There is plenty of fun and good craic!”
