December usually marks the start of Christmas festivities, with many people looking forward to spending time with loved ones.
However National Grief Awareness Week, which runs until December 8, is highlighting how coping at Christmas can be especially difficult for those struggling to come to terms with their loss.
South Eastern Trust Bereavement Co-ordinator Donna-Louise Laird explained how help is to hand for those who are trying to navigate their own grief journey.
“Christmas and the holiday season can be a very difficult time for people who have been bereaved, however long ago that may be. There is always support available.
“Our Regional website, Bereaved NI, offers a variety of information about multiple bereavement organisations across Northern Ireland, in over 100 different languages, to help those who are experiencing grief and bereavement. It ensures that they can find the organisation and help that suits their needs.”
Donna-Louise described how organisations such as Bereaved NI offer information and podcasts that are accessible to you.
“At this time of year, and with Christmas fast approaching, it can feel very isolating for those who are bereaved – especially as everyone is expecting you to be jolly, to be happy. A person who is dealing with their own grief should not feel that they can’t reach out as help is at hand.”
