End of an Era: Emergency Department Porter Retires After Four Decades of Dedicated Service

After 42 years of dedicated service as a Porter in the Emergency Department at the Ulster Hospital, Ian Patterson has retired.

Since joining the Ulster Hospital over four decades ago, Ian has been an integral part of the Emergency Department’s operations. With his warm demeanour and unwavering commitment to dedication and excellence, he has played a vital role in ensuring the smooth functioning of the department, often going above and beyond the call of duty assisting patients and staff.

Throughout his Portering career, Ian has earned the respect and admiration of his colleagues and patients. His reassuring presence and genuine concern for others provided comfort to countless individuals during their most vulnerable moments in the Emergency Department.

Reflecting on his career, Ian said, “I have had the pleasure of working alongside many great colleagues and friends who I will miss greatly.  I am looking forward to my retirement and the next chapter.  I would like to thank everyone that has been part of my journey over the years for the support they have given me.”

Wishing Ian well on his retirement, Assistant Director of Patient Experience, Jeff Thompson added, “I would like to wish Ian well on his much deserved retirement and to thank him for his many years of service within Patient Experience.  Ian will be missed greatly, not only by staff in the Emergency Department, but across many departments in the Ulster Hospital.”

Ian’s retirement marks the end of an era in the Emergency Department, he leaves behind a legacy that will be greatly missed by friends and colleagues that he had the pleasure of working alongside over the years.
