Live Longer Breathe Stronger – Every Smoke Free Day Makes A Difference

8th July 2026

The South Eastern Trust is highlighting the life-changing benefits of quitting smoking, with improvements to health beginning within minutes of a person’s final cigarette and continuing for many years afterwards.

There are many short and long-term benefits of giving up smoking.  Within just 20 minutes of quitting, heart rate and blood pressure begin to return to normal levels. After 24 hours, nicotine is no longer present in the body. Between two and 12 weeks, circulation improves and lung function increases, making everyday activities easier.

Further benefits continue to develop over months. Within one to nine months, many former smokers notice reduced coughing and breathlessness, as well as increased energy levels.  After one year, the risk of heart disease is around half that of someone who continues to smoke. After five years, the risk of cancers of the mouth, throat and bladder is reduced by half. By 10 years, the risk of dying from lung cancer is about half that of a smoker, while after 15 years, the risk of heart disease becomes similar to that of a non-smoker.

South Eastern Trust, Smoking Cessation Specialist, Claire Black, said, “Many people think the damage from smoking has already been done, but the truth is that the body starts to recover almost immediately after a person stops smoking. Every smoke-free day is a positive step towards better health.

“Quitting smoking is one of the best decisions anyone can make for themselves and their family. Not only does it improve physical health and reduce the risk of serious illnesses, it can also boost energy levels, improve quality of life and save money.

“Support is available every step of the way. People are much more likely to quit successfully when they access specialist support and we would encourage anyone attending any of the hospitals within the South Eastern Trust to ask their healthcare professional to make a referral.
