The Nursing & Midwifery Workforce Team in the South Eastern Health & Social Care Trust was delighted to welcome Lower Sixth Form students from schools across the Trust area to take part in a three-day work experience programme, for the first time since 2019. The programme recommenced following the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, providing students with invaluable hands-on experience and career insights into Nursing and Midwifery.
Over the three days, students had the opportunity to shadow experienced Nursing and Midwifery professionals, attend workshops and take part in interactive learning and clinical observations. This allowed students to gain a deeper understanding of the Nursing and Midwifery role and explore potential career paths.
One of the students attending the programme said, “I am now certain about my future career pathway. Thanks to these three days, I have pinpointed that I would like to go into Midwifery.”
Delighted to welcome students to the programme, Director of Nursing, Patient Experience & Allied Health Professions, Dr David Robinson added, “It is very important to host the work experience programme for students, something we lost out on during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is great to have the opportunity to talk to them about a career pathway in Nursing and Midwifery. It has been very energising!”
Clinical Educator, Tracy Gibney commented, “The Nursing and Midwifery role has developed so much over the years. There are so many career opportunities within Nursing and Midwifery and by hosting the work experience programme, we get the opportunity to show them to the students.
“It is an opportunity for our future Nursing and Midwifery workforce to gain first-hand insight into a day in the life of a Nurse of Midwife and the unique and valuable contribution they make to healthcare.”
