Children living with Type 1 Diabetes enjoyed an autumnal fun day and chance to play together and share their experiences of living with the condition at a recent fun day held at Ballyburren’s Outdoor Escape Centre.

The Ulster Hospital’s Paediatric Diabetes Specialist Nurse Rachel Boyle explained how the day was hosted by the Paediatric Diabetes Team with support from Paediatric Diabetes Specialist Nurses (PDSNs) and Psychologist.

“The day was made possible through funding by ‘Paeds In a Pod’, a charitable group set up to enhance the experience of service users of the Ulster Hospital Paediatric Unit,” said Rachel.

“Paeds in a Pod recently received a substantial donation by one of the families of the Paediatric Diabetes Service and the fun day was one initiative planned as a result of that kind donation.”

Rachel explained how some of the children who attended the day are the only child in their school year living with Type 1 Diabetes, “so meeting with others allowed them to feel that they are not alone.”

Rachel continued, “For the healthcare team, this was an opportunity to connect with the young people outside of a clinical setting, to strengthen therapeutic relationships for ongoing support and to be able to normalise Diabetes management and encourage participation in a wide range of activities.

“The young people – and adults took part in ‘den building’, wood crafts, marshmallow toasting around the bonfire and a ‘meet and greet’ with the alpacas. “

Rachel added how the Paediatric team received very positive feedback from parents and the children. “A parent fed back that her child had the best morning. It was something she really needed, as she had been struggling a bit recently with everything Diabetes. Another parent said how ‘great’ it was to connect with others and to meet with other mums of children living with the condition.”
