As part of Befriending Week, Belfast’s Lord Mayor Micky Murray hosted a number of volunteers to show his appreciation to those who are creating lasting connections to service users within the South Eastern Trust who are experiencing isolation and loneliness as part of the ‘Safe and Well’ initiative.
Arranged by lead organisation for volunteering, Volunteer Now, on behalf of the Befriending Network, Safe and Well Volunteer Befriending Officer Carol Campbell shared how much the celebration and invitation from the Lord Mayor was enjoyed by all who attended. “The Safe and Well initiative aims to reduce social isolation and loneliness in people who are aged 65 and over and who live in the Trust area. They can self-refer for a Safe and Well needs assessment by contacting our office. Our Safe and Well Officers complete a comprehensive needs assessment and refer to a wide range of community and statutory services.”
Carol continued, “When a Volunteer Befriender becomes available, a service user will be matched for Befriending visits and calls, usually weekly. Befriending creates community connections, both in-person and over the telephone. Friendships are said to enrich our lives and on a personal note I can see this enrichment on a daily basis when I speak with all the people who benefit from the regular visits and calls they receive from Safe and Well Volunteer Befrienders.”
Carol explained how Lisburn-based and long standing Community Befriender Pauline has been visiting and providing chat and connection with 91-year-old Frances for the past six years. “We were delighted that Pauline gave a talk on the day about her involvement with the service and what it means to her. Pauline enjoys the Befriending role so much that she has made another match and is providing weekly visits to another lady in her area!”
