Young Volunteers Bring Connection And Care To Patients At Thompson House Hospital

29th April 2026

What began as a few spare hours has grown into a deeply rewarding experience for 18-year-old Katie Mulholland and 17-year-old Harry Johnston, whose time as Befriender and Activity Volunteer’s has brought meaningful connection to patients at Lisburn’s Thompson House Hospital.

Since joining the South Eastern Trust facility in January, the pair have become valued members of the ward team. Thompson House Hospital provides Regional post-acute assessment and rehabilitation for adults living with an Acquired Brain Injury or Complex Neuro Disability.

A pupil at Friends’ School, Katie began volunteering around Christmas as part of her ambition to pursue a career in medicine.

Katie explained, “I am hoping to go on to university to study Medicine and by volunteering, I am getting a feel for what it would be like in a medical setting. I feel that volunteering is a way of giving back to the community.”

Katie shared how rewarding it is to spend time with the patients at Thompson House. “You really get a sense that the Service Users are benefiting from the time you spend with them. The time you give, the patient is getting something out it.”

Currently studying for her A’ Levels, Katie added how she hopes to continue with her volunteer role once her studies are complete. “I would definitely encourage anyone who is interested to get involved as a Volunteer. It is so rewarding to see how patients benefit and you feel that you are making an impact.”

Harry, who volunteers twice a week, also highlighted how much he values the experience, “I come to Thompson House every Tuesday and Wednesday.  I chat with patients, play games with them and sometimes walk around the grounds.

“I find it very rewarding and really enjoy the days I am on the wards. I have always been interested in working in a hospital environment and volunteering has given me the chance to see what that is like.”

Thompson House Hospital’s, Interim Manager, Victoria Quinn praised the contribution of both young Volunteers, “We are absolutely delighted to continue building our Volunteer Team and in particular to welcome such young Volunteers. It is wonderful to see Katie and Harry bringing such enthusiasm and kindness to our patients.

“I know that Katie and Harry get a lot out of coming to Thompson House and the flipside of that is our patients look forward to their visit.

“It is lovely to see the young people make that connection with patients as it really helps with their rehabilitation as well.”
